The name Fuleco comes from a combination of the Portuguese words for "football" and "ecology". The mascot is an armadillo, a species found in Brazil that is currently considered to be in danger of extinction. Fuleco's design is based on the three-banded armadillo, which is able to curl up into a ball to protect itself from predators. The three stripes on Fuleco's case represent the different colors of the Brazilian flag.
